Offense Comes Alive In UC Davis' 10-3 victory over LMU

Davis, Calif. — Junior Alex Gouveia and sophomore Mark Wolbert each racked up three RBIs to help lead the UC Davis Aggies past the LMU Lions 10-3 on Monday.

Freshman Zach Romero (1-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for UC Davis (7-13). The right-hander went 2.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits, allowing one walk and striking out one. Freshman Avery Thau also made an impact on the mound for the Aggies, starting the ballgame and throwing 1.1 scoreless innings while allowing no hits, with no walks and two strikeouts before leaving the game early due to injury.

The win for the Aggies eclipses their season total from a year ago, and the seven wins gives head coach Tommy Nicholson a career high that will continue to grow as the season progresses. The win also brings the Aggies back into the win column after entering Monday's game having lost their last four contests.

Wolbert was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, a triple and a walk in addition to his three RBIs. Gouveia put together a 3-for-4 day with a double and a walk, supplementing his three RBI performance for the Aggies and now enters the next Big West series sporting a .321 batting average. Freshman Ryan Lee compiled a standout effort as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI while being a true wall behind the dish.

Braydon Wooldridge also collected two hits and finished a double and an RBI. The Aggies saw nine different position players record hits today, a welcoming sight to see after struggling to piece get those elusive runs in the Cal State Fullerton series.

Pitching for the Aggies also stood tall today. As with most midweek games, the Aggies trotted out a plethora of arms and even with seven different pitchers toeing the rubber, the Aggies kept LMU off balance all day. Recording seven strikeouts as a staff and allowing just two runs on six hits, UC Davis will look to get similar performances with the added confidence in the upcoming Cal State Bakersfield series.

HOW IT HAPPENED

UC Davis broke the game open early with two runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back. Scoring in six of the eight possible innings, UC Davis applied the pressure the entire day as each hitter produced quality at-bats.
