Davis, Calif. — Presented with plenty of opportunities, UC Davis had a hard time cashing in, leaving 10 Aggies on base in a 4-1 loss at the hands of the Cal State Fullerton Titans on Sunday.
Freshman Braydon Wooldridge (0-1) came out of the bullpen for UC Davis (6-13) and took the loss while sophomore Carter Delaney earned the start and was brilliant for the Aggies. Starting his first game of the season, Delaney would go on to throw four scoreless innings, allowing three hits, with one walk and four strikeouts.
Sophomore Nick Leehey led the way offensively for the Aggies, going 2-for-3 in the ballgame with a walk and an RBI. Junior Damian Stone continued his upward trajectory as the Aggies leading hitter by putting together a noteworthy 2-for-5 performance from the plate. The Aggies were just inches away from a completely different offensive outcome after Jack Gallagher sent a ball in the bottom of the sixth way out of the park, which would have given the Aggies an early lead but was ruled foul by the third base umpire.
The Aggies will have a quick turnaround after the weekend series as they welcome the LMU Lions for a Monday midweek. First pitch tomorrow at Dobbins Stadium is scheduled for 12:00 P.M. Following their game against LMU, the Aggies will hit the road for a three-game set against Cal State Bakersfield.
HOW IT HAPPENED
A pitching duel for much of the first half, the Aggies found themselves trailing 4-0 after a three run home run from the Titans' Nate Nankil in the seventh, and an unearned run in the eighth. The Aggies were finally able to respond in the eighth inning as well after UC Davis picked up three singles in the bottom of the half of the inning and would score their lone run off an RBI single from Leehey, scoring Stone from third base. The Aggies were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
