Aggies Drops Series Opener Against Cal State Fullerton

Davis, Calif. — The UC Davis Aggies struggled on Friday, falling to the Cal State Fullerton Titans.

Right off the heels of finals week for all the students on the campus of UC Davis, the Aggies welcomed Cal State Fullerton into town for the first game of a three game set. Starting hot with a two-run first inning off the bats of two sacrifice flies, the Aggies offense would end there as UC Davis fell 11-2 Friday afternoon.

Back-to-back hits from Damian Stone and Joey Wright gave way to a James Williams III sac fly to bring across the first run of the game. Alex Gouveia would follow up that act with a single of his own and then Jack Gallagher would drive in the final run with a sac fly to center field.

That would be all the Aggie offense would produce today. Scoring just two runs, it wasn't for a lack of barrels as the Aggies as a team collected nine hits with Alex Gouveia being the only Aggie to record multiple hits.

For Cal State Fullerton, the Titans made UC Davis pay with a pair of home runs and a flurry of doubles that drove in 11 runs on the day. After a scoreless first inning from Alejandro Huezo, the Titans would respond in the second inning with two home runs, first off the bat of Brendan Bobo and then later, off the bat of Maddox Latta who's two run homer came after Cole Urman reached on a error induced, dropped third strike to extend the inning for the Titans.

Much of the same would continue throughout the game as Cal State Fullerton would use 13 hits, six of which were for extra bases, and five base on balls to tag on 11 runs.

Standing out for Fullerton today was Nate Nankil who went 4-5 with two doubles, three RBI, and two runs scored. Pitching for the Titans, Tyler Stultz went eight innings, allowing just two runs and recording five strikeouts. The sixth-year senior southpaw evaded dangerous situations all throughout the game and builded upon his recent Big West Pitcher of the Week award.

The Aggies will look to bounce back and even the series up tomorrow at 1 P.M. behind lefty, Bryan Green.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Aggies got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. UC Davis managed to push across two runs in the inning. The Aggies were unable to hold the lead, as Cal State Fullerton scored 11 times over the remaining eight innings to grab the 11-2 win.
