Davis, Calif. — The UC Davis Aggies fell 6-3 in an 11-inning matchup to the CSUN Matadors Friday.
Junior Danny Carrion (0-1) was lights out entering the game from the bullpen for UC Davis (5-9) but unfortunately, took the loss. Recording four strikeouts blowing his fastball past hitters, Carrion would eventually allow for the Matador's Nathan Barrazza to make the Aggies pay, hitting a critical bases clearing double that happened right after a fielder choice in which the Aggies recorded no outs. Even with the loss, the Aggies have a special reliever in the form of Carrion who flashed off all of his potential in two innings of work.
Freshman Alejandro Huezo was a bright spot for the Aggies, starting the ballgame and throwing five innings, giving up two runs, all earned, on two hits, with one walk and one strikeout. Making his first career start as the Friday guy for the Aggies to begin Big West play, Huezo settled in and limited the damage after a first inning that was characterized by nerves.
At the plate, the Aggies were paced by junior Alex Gouveia, who went 1-for-5 on the day with a home run and two RBI. The Aggies were limited to just three hits, with the trio of junior college transfers for UC Davis responsible for all of them. This group includes Gouveia, along with Jack Gallagher and Damian Stone who each recorded singles. Leighton Helfrick picked up the other Aggie RBI after drawing a walk with the bases loaded.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Aggies were trailing 2-0 in the seventh inning when they first put runs on the board. UC Davis plated two runs when Gouveia left the yard with senior James Williams aboard for his second home run of the season.
The Matadors then scored four runs to retake their advantage heading into the eleventh inning, when the Aggies responded by getting back on the scoreboard themselves. UC Davis scored a run when freshman Leighton Helfrick drew a walk from junior Joshua Romero that scored junior Damian Stone, which brought the score to 6-3 in favor of the Matadors. The Aggies were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
