Aggies Edged by Gauchos in Triton Invite Finale

LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC Davis concluded the Triton Invite with a matchup against No. 16 UC Santa Barbara. The Gauchos were stout on the defensive end and edged the 6-5 victory over the Aggies in the low-scoring affair.

UC Davis (3-5) earned two wins and suffered two defeats on the weekend, with both wins coming over ranked opponents. The Aggies were a goal away from grabbing their straight victory, but UC Santa Barbara's early lead was too much for them to overcome in the second half.

Noëlle Wijnbelt continued her excellent run of form, making it four straight contests with multiple goals. The senior scored twice on the afternoon.

Kelly Hungerford was lively on the attack with two assists and a goal while Sam Yoo and Grace Pelkey also found the back of the cage.

How It Happened
The Aggies were first on the board when their leading scorer fired her team into the lead. UC Santa Barbara would immediately respond, however, with two goals before the end of the first period.

UC Davis would level the contest at 2-2 early in the second quarter, but the Gauchos would thrust themselves into the lead, scoring four straight goals to take control.

This was enough for UC Santa Barbara to see out the victory despite late goals from Yoo, Pelkey, and Hungerford in the dying minutes.

Up Next
UC Davis will return to the friendly confines of the Schaal Aquatic Center to host the Aggie Invite starting on Feb. 11. The Aggies' first contest will commence Saturday morning at 10:20 a.m. against No. 4 Cal.
