DAVIS, Calif. –After eight straight contests on the road, UC Davis greeted its homes fans with a win at Schaal Aquatics Center, picking up the 9-7 victory over No. 19 San Jose State to open the Aggie Invite.
UC Davis (4-6) fell in the first match of the day as No. 4 Cal delivered a strong performance to win the 15-5 decision.
Hailey Williams and
Noëlle Wijnbelt highlighted the UC Davis attack with their hat tricks on Saturday afternoon.
Gianna Nocetti was lively on both ends with two goals and four steals across both contests.
Kelly Hungerford and
Ashley Salem were instrumental in the Aggies' win over San Jose State, as each recorded a goal and an assist to lift their team to victory.
Cal 15, UC Davis 5
Nocetti cancelled out Cal's goal to open the game before Williams found the back of the cage just under the one-minute mark in the first period. However, back-to-back goals from Ruby Swadling of the Golden Bears sparked a 4-0 scoring run for the visitors. This allowed Cal to build an 8-3 lead before the halftime whistle.
The Bears maintained their momentum and rallied for three straight goals in the third period. Williams and
Alyssa Lengtat would net a couple goals near the end, but Cal would cruise to the 15-5 victory, its second over UC Davis this season.
UC Davis 9, San Jose State 7
Wijnbelt converted her five-meter chance to open the scoring in the second game of the day. Clague and Nocetti followed with goals less than a minute apart to give the Aggies a quick 3-0 advantage before San Jose State finally got on the board. At the 3:20 mark in the first period, Wijnbelt scored her second goal of the game to make it 4-1 after eight minutes of play.
Sam Yoo etched her name on the scoresheet to answer the Spartans' early goal in the second, but the visitors would score once more before halftime to make it 5-3 at the break.
Each team scored twice in the third quarter, with Salem and Hungerford providing the goals. In the final period, Wijnbelt completed her hat trick and Fundter finished off a penalty shot to clinch the 9-7 win.
