UC Davis struggles in 12-2 loss to Santa Clara

Davis, Calif. - The UC Davis Aggies struggled on Saturday, falling to the Santa Clara Broncos 12-2 despite the efforts of sophomore Mark Wolbert, who went 1-for-2 with a home run and an RBI.

Junior Nate Freeman (0-2) got the ball to start for UC Davis (2-3) and took the loss. Junior Kaden Riccomini was a bright spot for the Aggies, coming out of the bullpen and throwing two scoreless innings, allowing one hit, with two walks and three strikeouts.

Wolbert led the way offensively for the Aggies, going 1-for-2 in the ballgame with a home run, two walks and an RBI. Sophomore Nick Leehey provided a noteworthy performance as well, going 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Junior Damian Stone also chipped in, going 2-for-5 for UC Davis.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Aggies were trailing 4-0 in the fifth inning when they first put runs on the board. UC Davis got an RBI single from Leehey, scoring Stone from second base.

The Aggies deficit expanded to 7-1 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the eighth inning. UC Davis picked up a run on Wolbert's leadoff home run off of the Broncos Skylar Hales, which tightened the Broncos lead to 7-2. The Aggies were unable to get any closer, as Santa Clara added five runs to their tally on the way to a 12-2 final.
