FRESNO, Calif. – Led by four-time All-American
Noëlle Wijnbelt who tallied seven goals on the day, UC Davis enjoyed a perfect weekend at the Fresno State Invite by picking up a pair of wins over Azusa Pacific and Biola.
UC Davis (7-7) got back to .500 on the young season following two terrific performances. It was a stress-free day for the Aggies who never trailed in either contest.
Noëlle Wijnbelt shined brightest on a great day for UC Davis, scoring seven total goals over the two contests. The Tustin, Calif. native netted twice against
Azusa Pacific before exploding for a season-high five goals in the afternoon victory over Biola.
Grace Pelkey also turned in two excellent performances, matching Wijnbelt with five goals in the second game of the day before scoring once in the weekend opener.
Gianna Nocetti set the tone for UC Davis by scoring four times against Azusa Pacific, with three of those goals coming in the first period of game one.
Madison Sparre registered five points in the morning contest, dishing out two assists to go along with her hat trick.
UC Davis 15, Azusa Pacific 10
Nocetti was off to a blistering start in the early minutes of the contest, registering a hat trick within the first four minutes. Wijnbelt then got her name on the scoresheet,
Grace Pelkey netted her first goal of the day, and Sparre converted a power-play opportunity to cap off a six-goal first period for UC Davis.
Wijnbelt dented the twine to cancel out an early Azusa Pacific goal in the second quarter and
Morgan Polterock followed with a penalty shot at the 1:38 mark. With less than a minute to place in the half,
Katie O'Laughlin scored her first collegiate goal in a wonderful moment for the freshman. UC Davis were extremely bright in the first 16 minutes, taking a 9-2 lead into the break.
Kelly Hungerford and Sparre each scored in the third period and the Aggies would maintain an 11-5 advantage going into the final period.
UC Davis retained its form in the last quarter when
Ashley Salem quickly fired two goals and Nocetti scored her fourth goal of the game. Sparre completed her hat trick with just over two minutes to play, sealing the 15-10 victory.
UC Davis 16, Biola 7
Wijnbelt opened the scoring with her goal less than one minute into the contest, and Hungerford immediately the lead by netting a goal just 30 seconds later.
Biola cut the lead in half with a penalty shot but Pelkey replied with goal just under the two-minute mark to restore the two-goal advantage.
Alyssa Lengtat and Pelkey extended the lead early in the second period, but Biola's Kourtney Pyle netted four consecutive goals to bring the Eagles within one. However, it would be all UC Davis the rest of the way behind Wijnbelt's fantastic attacking display, recording her hat trick following a quick double in the third period. She added two more goals for good measure in the fourth quarter, making it a season-high five goals for the four-time All-American.
Also recording a five-goal haul was Pelkey, who scored twice in the last four minutes to help solidify the 16-7 win for the Aggies.
