IRVINE, Calif. – UC Davis competed in the first game of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational on Friday afternoon and No. 4 Cal came away with the 8-3 win, defeating the Aggies for the third time this season.
UC Davis (7-8) battled well against one of the top-ranked teams in the nation, remaining even with the Golden Bears in most statistical categories. Cal only tallied four more shots than the Aggies, but were much more efficient with its chances, registering a shot percentage of .276 compared to UC Davis' .120.
Hailey Williams enjoyed a decent game offensively, finding the back of the net and while also providing an assist.
Gianna Nocetti and
Sam Yoo were the other goal-scorers on the afternoon. Highlighting a strong defensive showing was
Ally Clague, who snatched two steals in the contest.
Sophia Noble delivered a solid performance in goal, making 12 saves.
How It Happened
Cal stormed out of the gates by scoring four first-quarter goals to take a quick 4-0 lead after eight minutes. Both teams would tighten up defensively in the second period, as each time would only score once.
Hailey Williams netted the Aggies' first goal of the game, but the Golden Bears would retain their four-goal advantage going into the break.
UC Davis opened the second-half scoring when Nocetti scored to capitalize on a power-play opportunity. That would conclude the scoring in the third quarter, making it a three-goal game heading into the final period.
Cal finished strong in the last eight minutes, recording three goals to put the game out of reach. Yoo rounded out the scoring for the Aggies, tallying her goal with 11 seconds remaining, but the Golden Bears would hold on for the 8-3 win.
