DAVIS, Calif. – UC Davis concluded its weekend with an 11-9 win over Cal Baptist to close out the Aggie Invite at Schaal Aquatics Center.
UC Davis (5-7) dropped a decision to No. 1 Stanford in the morning contest as the reigning national champions proved to be too much to handle.
Kelly Hungerford provided a sparkling offensive performance in the Aggies' win over Cal Baptist, scoring four goals and dishing out four assists. The junior utility was making an impact in all areas of the game, snatching three steals and drawing one exclusion in her stellar day.
Alyssa Lengtat was fantastic in the second game of the day posting a hat trick with a pair of assists. She tallied two steals and drew an exclusion in the win.
Sophia Noble was solid in goal, racking up 10 saves in match against Cal Baptist.
Stanford 16, UC Davis 3
The nation's top team was dominant from the start, stringing three goals together in the first period.
Tess Fundter stopped the run with her goal at the 3:40 mark and
Grace Pelkey would get her name on the scoresheet just before the end of the period, but Stanford would take a 5-2 lead after eight minutes.
It was all Cardinal in the second period as the visitors out-scored UC Davis 5-0 in the second quarter.
Makenna Ferguson scored her first goal of the season just before the whistle blew in the third period, but that would be it for the Aggies, and Stanford would earn the 16-3 victory.
UC Davis 11, Cal Baptist 9
Hungerford and Lengtat scored less than 30 seconds apart to give the Aggies a quick 2-0 advantage in the contest. Cal Baptist answered with just over two minutes left in the first quarter but Lengtat found her second goal of the game to give UC Davis a 3-1 lead after one.
Noëlle Wijnbelt found the back of the cage to extend the advantage to three goals early in the second quarter. Cal Baptist started to find rhythm offensively with back-to-back goals from Maddie Schwegler, cutting the deficit to one. Hungerford finally ended her team's scoring drought by capitalizing on a power play opportunity before
Ally Clague scored her first goal of the day. Hungerford completed her first-half hat trick and the Aggies managed a 7-4 lead at halftime.
The visitors regrouped during the halftime team talk and came out firing, tallying two straight goals to claw within one. Continuing her fantastic day at the pool, Hungerford collected her fourth goal to restore UC Davis' two-goal lead. However, Cal Baptist scored twice in the final minute, adding a goal at the horn to tie things up at 8-8 heading into the final period.
The Aggies returned to form in the last eight minutes as Lengtat scored a power-play goal before
Ashley Salem and
Madison Sparre registered goals to give their team the cushion they needed to earn the 11-9 victory.
