Aggies Return to Winning Ways with 79-40 Win Over Jessup

DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis returned to its winning ways in emphatic fashion with a dominant 79-40 victory over Jessup University on Tuesday night inside the University Credit Union Center.

After a six-game road trip, the Aggies (3-5) proved to be comfortable inside their home gym by shooting a season-high 52.5% from the floor in a massive win for the home team.

UC Davis got a big night from Tova Sabel who dropped a game-high 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting, going 4-of-9 from beyond the arc.

Evanne Turner hit four threes in her 16-point night and was all over the floor, grabbing five rebounds and dishing out five assists. Sydney Burns enjoyed a great all-around performance, matching her career-high of nine assists while chipping in with seven points and six boards.

UC Davis out-rebounded Jessup 48-28 in Tuesday's game, led by 11 boards from Megan Norris. The Menlo Park, Calif. native was just one point shy of a double-double as she tallied nine points on the night.

The UC Davis defense caused its share of mistakes in Tuesday's game, forcing 13 turnovers while holding the Warriors to just 25% from the floor. Those takeaways turned into 14 points on the offensive end of the floor.

How It Happened
Sabel paced the offense early with a pair of three-pointers to net the team's first six points of the game. Scoring five quick points was Norris, burying a three to spark some life into her team before Burns finished off a drive to the basket to give her team an early lead at the under-five media timeout.

It quickly became a 12-2 run for the Aggies that resulted in a 17-8 advantage after the first 10 minutes.

Burns caught fire with five consecutive points to open up the second quarter and Norris poured in layup to force a quick Jessup timeout as UC Davis pushed its lead to double-digits. Continuing her excellent first half was Sabel, going on a five-point scoring streak of her own to reach double figures.

The Aggies extended the lead beyond 20 points when Evanne Turner found the shooting stroke with a layup and back-to-back triples, giving herself eight points in a flash. By out-scoring the Warriors 26-11 in the second period, UC Davis built a 43-19 lead at the break.

Mazatlan Harris knocked down a three-pointer from the corner and Ally Fitzgerald scored a layup in transition to get things going in the third frame. After Turner's third triple of the night, Bria Shine got involved with a shot from the perimeter to catapult the Aggies to a 27-point advantage.

The lead went beyond the 30-point mark when Nya Epps showed her speed on the break to net two quick layups. Sabel found the bottom of the net from long range once more before the quarter break, making the score 63-31 heading into the final period.

Back-to-back baskets from Sabel sparked an 8-0 run for UC Davis. Enjoying a memorable moment was Clara Glad, who scored her first collegiate basket while making it a 40-point lead for her squad. The Aggies cruised the rest of the way, earning the 79-40 win to get back in the win column.
