UC Davis Equestrian Looks to Finish Fall Season Strong

DAVIS, Calif. — The UC Davis equestrian team concludes its fall portion of the season when they host the No. 2 SMU Mustangs on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. The meet, the Aggies' first of the season at home, is scheduled to begin with Fences at 8:00 a.m.

UC Davis (2-2, 2-0) enters Saturday's match after a dominant showing against Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) opponents South Dakota State and Minnesota Crookston in head-to-head meets in South Dakota two weekends before. The Aggies took down the Jackrabbits 14-4 and defeated the Golden Eagles 19-1.

HISTORY
Formerly conference opponents, the Aggies and Mustangs have squared off four times before. SMU leads the all-time series 4-0 and won the most recent matchup 14-6 in November of last year. The Aggies narrowly lost the time before in the 2021 ECAC Semifinal meet, 10-9.

ABOUT THE AGGIES
UC Davis picked up all eight MOPs last time out against South Dakota State and Minnesota Cookston. Sierra Gunderseon (86) and Carly Sweeney (90) won in Fences, Carly Sweeney (80) and Lauren Kolbe (80) won in Flat, Natasha Replogle (78.5) and Jordan Schween (75.5) won in Horsemanship and Macey Newkirk (74.5) and Kendal Scheiner (72.5) won in Reining.

Sweeney's 90 in Fences tied for the second best Fences score in UC Davis program history. Natasha Replogle's 78.5 in Horsemanship tied for first in the Aggie record books, as did Macey Newkirk's 74.5 Reining score. 

The Aggies won the 2023 ECAC Conference Championship and are currently the highest ranked ECAC team by the NCEA. 

ABOUT THE MUSTANGS
SMU (3-1) is coming off three straight victories over top five opponents, following a loss to now No. 1 TCU in their opening meet of the season. The Mustangs rode over No. 5 Oklahoma State, No. 4 Texas A&M and most recently, No. 2 Auburn. 

SMU is the defending NCEA National Champion.
