Fullerton, Calif. — The UC Davis women's soccer team was narrowly edged out by Cal State Fullerton 1-0 Sunday afternoon in a matchup between a pair of top-ranked teams within the conference.
UC Davis is now 7-6-2 with a 3-2-2 mark in conference, good for third place in the Big West while the Titans are now 6-4-7 with a 4-1-3 record in league fixtures to maintain their presence as the second ranked team, just slightly ahead of UC Davis.
Despite the defeat, the Aggies were resilient in their efforts, pressing forward with a multitude of scoring chances.
With nearly 40 shots shared between each team today, the Aggies were responsible for 15 shots, with six being on goal.
Much of these scoring opportunities and efforts for the Aggies came after Cal State Fullerton's goal in the 30th minute from Makenna McGill.
In an effort to fight their way back to even on the scoreboard, UC Davis recorded nine of their 15 shots in the second half.
With the Aggies at this stage in the season known for their dominating possession within the midfield, the Titans made it a point of emphasis to be physical at the point of attack. This physicality was illustrated by the foul discrepancy in which the Titans were called for a total of 15 fouls, with three yellow cards, while the Aggies were just called for five fouls.
The physical play from the Titans disrupted the Aggie striking momentum but it wasn't the differentiator in today's contest. As mentioned, the Aggies were presented with plenty of scoring opportunities that just didn't bounce their way, with
Leslie Fregoso,
Lindsey Porter,
Emma Vane, and
Sam Tristan each accounting for shots on goal.
The best effort for UC Davis came late in the game around the 88th minute from the aforementioned Tristan who was left unmarked in the box, freeing her up for a wide-open header look that just narrowly went over the top of the goal, missing the goal by merely inches.
