DAVIS, Calif. – UC Davis cruised to its third consecutive Big West victory behind an excellent performance off the bench from
Victoria Baker, leading the Aggies to a 79-57 win over CSU Bakersfield.
Baker matched her career-high with 16 points in just 15 minutes of action. The redshirt freshman was 6-of-9 from the field and grabbed four rebounds while connecting on all three of her free throw attempts.
UC Davis (9-10, 5-4) sweep the season series against the Roadrunners after enjoying another solid shooting night, posting a team field goal percentage of 47.3%. The Aggies nailed 13 threes which marks their second-best three-point shooting display of the year.
Reaching double figures for the third straight game,
Megan Norris was dominant in the post with her 15 points and five boards. She felt the shooting touch as she went 6-for-6 from the charity stripe and buried her one three-point attempt.
Tess Sussman contributed 11 points to the cause, with nine coming in the opening 10 minutes.
Evanne Turner started slowly but chipped in with eight points on the night while
Nya Epps and
Makaila Sanders came through with some good showings off the bench, registering seven points apiece.
How It Happened
Sussman was off to a blistering start in the early minutes of the contest, knocking down three triples in the first quarter to propel her team to 20-7 lead after 10 minutes. Head Coach
Jennifer Gross dialed in another impressive defensive gameplan to stifle CSU Bakersfield, as the Aggies held the Roadrunners without a field goal for nearly six minutes.
Sydney Burns got in on the action with a three-pointer of her own and UC Davis would take a 13-point lead into the second period.
The Aggies got a huge spark from their bench in the second quarter to extend the lead beyond 20 points.
Nya Epps found rhythm on the offensive end with five points in the period while Baker exploded for seven points of her own. With an explosive finish at the rim that resulted in a three-point play, Baker capped off a 10-0 run for the hosts, giving the Aggies a 23-point lead.
UC Davis shot over 80% from the floor in the third quarter to take full control of the contest. Norris poured in eight points as she was able to take advantage of some easy looks inside.
Mazatlan Harris netted a shot from deep before layups from Norris and
Sydney Burns gave the Aggies a 28-point advantage, their largest of the game.
The Roadrunner managed a 7-0 run to start the final period but it would prove to be too little, too late, as UC Davis would coast to the 79-57 win and successfully defend their home court.
