Aggies Stunned in the Final Seconds by UC San Diego

DAVIS, Calif. – UC Davis suffered a heartbreaking defeat on Monday afternoon when Izzy Forsyth of UC San Diego scored a layup on the final possession to stun the Aggies in the dying seconds of the contest.

UC Davis (6-10, 2-4) battled back from a six-point halftime deficit to take the lead in fourth quarter. The Aggies had a chance to win it with 20 seconds left, but UC San Diego (7-9, 4-2) got the stop on the defensive end before landing the finishing blow with just one second left on the clock. It was a back-and-forth affair inside the University Credit Union Center that featured 10 lead changes.

Three Aggies scored in double figures in a solid offensive showing for the hosts. Evanne Turner delivered another excellent performance with her game-high 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting with four rebounds and three triples.

Battling on both ends of the floor was Tess Sussman, who notched her third double-double of the year. The forward posted 12 points while pulling down 10 boards on the day. Tova Sabel enjoyed a decent day off the bench with 10 points to her name on a very efficient 5-of-7 from the field.

UC Davis had success working the ball inside, racking up 34 points in the paint, but the Tritons held the advantage on the glass, 33-28.

How It Happened
Sussman got into a rhythm early in the game as she went a perfect 4-for-4 in the opening period to give herself eight early points. Turner matched Sussman on the offensive end by posting eight points of her own. After 10 minutes, UC Davis held a 19-17 lead.

The Aggies' leading scorer continued to light it up with five straight points to start the second quarter. However, UC San Diego would storm into the lead by using a 20-5 run over a six-minute stretch.

The Tritons caught fire in the second quarter and shot over 50% from the floor in the first half. UC Davis managed to limit the damage when free throws from Victoria Baker and Sydney Burns made the score 41-35 at the break.

UC Davis responded well to the early adversity, rallying for a 5-0 scoring run following a three-ball from Burns and scoop layup from Sabel. The Aggies stepped up defensively and held the Tritons scoreless for over three minutes which sparked another 6-0 run to put the hosts out in front. A couple late buckets restored the lead for UC San Diego, who took a one-point lead into the final quarter.

Turner carried the load in the fourth quarter, scoring seven of the Aggies' 12 points. Things started to heat up in the last two minutes after Burns tied the game with her free throw at the 1:20 mark. UC
San Diego took the lead momentarily, but Mazatlan Harris drove baseline and banked in a layup to level the score at 63-63. UC Davis got a crucial stop to give itself a chance to win the game with 20 seconds remaining.

The Aggies had a decent look on their last possession, but the shot would fall off the iron, giving the visitors one last chance. The Tritons advanced the ball with a timeout and worked an impressive inbounds play to find space for a wide-open layup with one second remaining, stunning UC Davis and earning the 65-63 win.
