BERKELEY-
Ulonzo Gilliam, Jr. broke the UC Davis all-purpose yards career record and the Aggies raced out to a strong start but fell in the season opener at Cal, 34-13, on Saturday at FTX Field at California Memorial Stadium.
The first quarter was all Aggies (0-1) as the Golden Bears (1-0) were held to -1 total yards as UC Davis held the ball for over 10 minutes in the frame. The defensive effort was led by two back-to-back sacks on consecutive third downs as
Da'Von Frazier and
Jaylin White took down Jack Plummer deep in Cal territory.
UC Davis then struck first as
Miles Hastings found
Chaz Davis on a four-yard strike to take the 7-0 lead on a 14-play drive. The touchdown reception was a career first for the Stockton, Calif., native.
On the ensuing drive by Cal on the very first play, linebacker
Teddye Buchanan picked off a Plummer pass at the Cal 34. The sophomore captain finished with a team-high eight tackles and added a quarterback hurry.
Cal went into the locker room at the half with a 17-7 lead and then added seven more to make it 24-7, before Gilliam, Jr., and the Aggie offense pulled to within 11 on a 60-yard score from their senior captain.
The Merced, Calif., native later broke the all-purpose yards record in the fourth quarter when he gained three yards on a Hastings pass late in the fourth quarter. The reception put his game total exactly at 150 yards to eclipse the career record of G.P. Muhammad's 4,629 by one. Gilliam, Jr., led all players with 115 yards on 14 carries and added a game-high seven receptions for 35 yards.
The Aggies compiled 387 yards of total offense as Hastings finished the day, 32-of-50 passing for 242 yards and a score with two interceptions.
UC Davis will continue the beginning of the season on the road as the Aggies head to Brookings, S.D to face No. 2/3 South Dakota State on Saturday, Sept. 10. The rematch of the first round of the FCS Playoffs is slated to kick at 4 p.m. PT.
