Aggies swept by Hawaii in closely-contested battle

UC Davis returns home Thursday to continue conference play against UC Irvine

HONOLULU – The UC Davis women's volleyball team had their limits tested in a jam-packed arena, but ultimately fell in three sets to the University of Hawaii at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, Hawaii.

UC Davis dropped its first conference game of the season, now standing at 1-1 in Big West Conference play and 6-6 overall on the season. Hawaii improved to 1-0 in the conference standings and 4-5 overall.

Redshirt junior Demari Webb led the Aggies with eight kills while sophomore Olivia Utterback and junior Lana Radakovic each added six more kills to the UC Davis offense that collected 32 kills on the night.

The Aggies and Rainbow Wahine traded blows and mini runs in the opening set. Back-and-forth, the scoring went with neither team having a lead more than four points in the frame. The score was knotted nine times with six lead changes as Hawaii eventually took the first set by a slim score of 25-22.

To begin the second set, Hawaii utilized a 6-0 run through a momentum-swinging challenge to take a 13-5 lead at a UC Davis timeout. The Aggies strung together a 3-0 run out of the break, but Hawaii continued to pile on the pressure and extended their lead to double-digits, 23-13.

As the Aggies looked to keep their fighting spirits up, the third set started equal at 7-7. UC Davis and Hawaii continued to exchange points in a heated frame with the Aggies holding a 15-14 edge into a media timeout. However, Hawaii would not stop its growing momentum from throughout the night, equipping a 4-0 run to ultimately take the third set, 25-21.

The Aggies hit .131 for the match compared to .293 for the Rainbow Wahine.

UC Davis return home to University Credit Union Center Thursday to continue conference play against UC Irvine at 7 pm PT.
