RENO, Nev. – The UC Davis men's tennis team concluded its first competition of the fall season with three days of action at the Wolf Pack Invitational. The Aggies secured 11 victories and three doubles wins over the course of the weekend.
Senior
Andrei Volgin represented UC Davis at the Battle of the Bay qualifier and advanced to the semifinal round. Volgin, the No. 4 seed in the tournament defeated Andrew Tjoa (UCSC), 6-3, 6-1, in the round of 32, downed Alex Chang (Cal), 7-6(4), 6-7(3), 6-3, in the round of 16 and then took care of No. 5 seed (5) Johannes Seeman (SDSU), 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, in the quarterfinal. Volgin was edged in the semifinals by No. 8 seed (8) James Watt (SMC), 6-3, 7-5.
Facing Air Force and host Nevada to start the 2022-23 schedule, newcomer
Constantinos Djakouris paced UC Davis with four singles victories, including two on Sunday. Senior
Coleton Hootman added a pair of singles victories, while classmate
Mitchell Davis, transfer
Sam De Vries and freshman
Lucas Bollinger claimed a singles victory apiece.
In doubles action, Davis and De Vries teamed up to win two matches, while sophomore
Ryan Torres and Bollinger notched a doubles victory.
The Aggies will return to the courts at home when they host the Aggie Pro-Am on Sunday, Sept. 25.
