Lowell, MA — The UC Davis Aggies were able to tie the game up with under three minutes remaining in regulation off a penalty corner, but fell to UMass Lowell in a shootout with a end-game result of 3-4. The Aggies were able to score late in regulation off a corner that got sent to the middle by
Shannon Lackey, who targeted
Lizzy Tedrow who proceeded to redirect it immediately back to Lackey near the end-line where she was able to sneak a goal past the UMass Lowell keeper finding the bottom left corner of the net. The resurgent Aggies were down most of the game and came alive in the second half before being nearly edged out by the River Hawks.
The teams battled back and forth for 20 minutes of overtime play with neither side being able to end the standstill. Forcing a shootout,
Grace Austin was able to get the Aggies on the board first beating UMass Lowell's EleonoreBoekhorst. It would be the only score UC Davis would record in the shootout as UML's Madison Leeper secured the win for the River Hawks.
After going down early 0-2, UC Davis was able to respond with a goal of their own when
Brooke Sanchez found the back of the net off a
Milou Korthouwer assist. This goal marked Sanchez's fourth on the year which leads all Aggie members. This goal would cut the lead to 1-2, but before the half, UML was able to score another goal making it 1-3 at half.
Going into the half the Aggies had an uphill battle but didn't quit until the last minute. Just when everyone thought the game was over,
Skylar Richards was able to score her second goal of the year off a
Caroline Stutte assist to cut the lead to 2-3 with just five minutes left to play. That was when magic struck. Just two minutes after the Richard's goal, the aforementioned score from
Shannon Lackey tied the game up at three a piece with only three minutes of regulation.
On the day the UC Davis Aggies were efficient with their shot attempts after recording 10 on the day with eight of them being on goal. This efficiency carried over into the penalty corners as well for the Aggies as they were able to capitalize with goals on two of their four corner attempts.
The Aggies defense stood tall today as well against one of the best teams in the nation and America East Conference, as the goalie duo of
Kalli Wagnon and
Sarah Lopez were able to stuff shots all day, recording 12 saves combined. It was Lopez who shined in the second half recording eight saves not allowing any goals, outside of the penalty shootout.
UC Davis (1-6, 0-2) played a game that was filled with thrills and will look to quickly bounce back when they visit Quinnipiac (3-3) tomorrow in a nonconference match that will conclude their East Coast trip before they head back home to host Stanford, Sunday, Sept. 25.
