Box Score EUGENE, Ore. – UC Davis fell to No. 18 Oregon, 3-0, on the first day of the Oregon Invitational at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene, Ore.
"We didn't show up ready to perform," head coach
Dan Conners said. "I didn't prepare us well enough. We have to be more urgent and ready to show up and play our best volleyball all the time every play."
With 25-8, 25-8, and 25-20 set scores, the Aggies were handed their first loss of the season, dropping to 3-1 overall. The Ducks improved to 3-0 on the season.
To begin the first set, Oregon started strong, rattling off a 6-2 run. It wouldn't get easier for the Aggies as the Ducks continued to pile on pressure and eventually went to take the opening set, 25-8.
In the second set, the Aggie offense was stymied by the Oregon defense, allowing the Ducks to go on a 10-1 run to jump out to a 12-3 lead. Miscommunication and ball-handling mistakes ultimately cost UC Davis in the closing moments of the middle set, dropping it by a score of 25-8.
For the third and final set, the Aggies and Ducks battled fiercely back and forth to a 15-15 tie. Oregon finally separated themselves with a 3-0 run, forcing UC Davis to take a time out. The Ducks continued to pour on momentum from their home crowd and put the bow on with a 25-20 set victory.
The Aggies wrap up play in the Oregon Invitational, facing Rice University on Sept. 2 at 4 PM PT to close out their five-game road trip.
