UC Davis Falls to Holy Cross, 3-2, in Season Opener

DAVIS, Calif. – Junior forward Skylar Richards and senior Grace Austin each shined, scoring goals in a match that saw the Aggies outshoot their guests by a 9-8 margin, but ultimately, UC Davis fell to Holy Cross 3-2 Saturday afternoon.

The Aggies fall to 0-1 on the year. Holy Cross moves to 1-1 on the year, recording their first victory in 2022 after losing to Stanford the day before.

Junior Allie McDonough got the Crusaders off to a hot start scoring the first goal of the game 4:19 into the second quarter. The Aggies would rally back and score two goals of their own. Skylar Richards gave the Aggies their first goal of the 2022 season after scoring at 8:32 of the second quarter to tie the game up after a Grace Austin assist. Coming out strong to start the third period, Austin would find the back of the net herself, to give UC Davis a 2-1 lead. The Aggies would hold onto this lead for about eight minutes of play.

With Holy Cross recording a corner advantage of 7-3, these opportunities would eventually prove be too much for the Aggies to overcome. Senior Sinead Walsh would notch a goal for the Crusaders to even the score back at 2-2, after an assist from sophomore Meggan Fourie. Moments later, the Crusaders would capitalize on yet another corner, when Holy Cross's Gabby Venezia found the back of the net at the 13:20 mark of the third period, giving Holy Cross a 3-2 lead that they would hold onto for the rest of the game.

UC Davis will look to bounce back as they return to action again Sept. 2, hosting Michigan State at Aggie Field Hockey Facility for a noon start. This will be followed by three more home games against Bellarmine (Sept. 4), Indiana (Sept. 5), and Wake Forest (Sept. 9).
