Davis, Calif. -
Caeley Goldstein was named the Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Week after leading UC Davis to shutouts in the opening week of the season, the conference announced on Monday.
A transfer from Washington, Monday's honor is the first weekly honor in the redshirt sophomore's career.
In the season opener on Aug. 18 against UTEP, Goldstein faced four shots and made two saves in a 3-0 win in El Paso. She followed with a career-high seven saves to lead the Aggies to one of the biggest wins in recent program history against No. 5 Santa Clara on Aug. 21 in a 1-0 win. It was the first time UC Davis has beaten the Broncos since 1982 and the first win over a nationally-ranked opponent in program history.
Among Goldstein's heroics against Santa Clara, she made two saves six seconds apart in the 80th minute and her final save came on the Bronco's last chance in the 88th minute. Goldstein also had two saves in the 78th minute and made six in total in the second half.
