DAVIS, Calif. – Week two of training camp is underway and newly appointed leaders have been announced for the 2022 season. Senior running back Ulonzo Gilliam Jr. and sophomore linebacker
Teddye Buchanan were voted team captains for the upcoming season, head coach
Dan Hawkins announced.
The selection of Gilliam, Jr. marks the third-straight season the Merced, Calif., native has been named a captain, which is a program record. The appointment eclipses the likes of two-time captains Ken O'Brien, Bo Eason, Mike Moroski, and J.T. O'Sullivan, to name a few.
Gilliam, Jr. was voted a captain in the spring and fall seasons of 2021. He enters 2022 on the Walter Payton Award watch list, has garnered Preseason All-America honors from Phil Steele and Stats Perform and was named the Big Sky Preseason Offensive MVP.
Buchanan was named a captain for the first time. Only a sophomore, the linebacker represented the Aggies at the Big Sky Kickoff this summer in Spokane, Wash. The South San Francisco native led the team last season in tackles with 74, including 40 solo stops. Buchanan added two sacks, two interceptions and 5.5 tackles for loss.
The 6-2 linebacker earned the team's Mike Wise Award, given to the most outstanding freshman. He also was named to the Big Sky Fall All-Academic Team.
The UC Davis football team opens the 2022 season against Pac-12 foe California on Saturday, Sept. 3. The Aggies will play five regular season home games at the newly resurfaced UC Davis Health Stadium and open their 2022 home slate against San Diego on Saturday, Sept. 17.
