Davis, Calif. - Playing shorthanded in the final game of the 2022 season, UC Davis battled Long Beach State on Saturday before falling 3-0 at Dobbins Stadium. UC Davis' four seniors -
J.D. Mico,
Kyler Arenado,
Nate Lemos, and
Raul Sandoval - were honored before the game.
The Aggies went into the day with limited pitching depth but a combination of
Carson Seeman,
Andrew LaCour,
Nathan Peng, and
Kyler Arenado were able to hold Long Beach State to just three runs.
Seeman threw a career-high four innings as the starter, allowing just a run in the third inning. LaCour went 2 1/3 innings and Peng moved from designated hitter to pitcher to throw 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Arenado finished his collegiate career with a flourish, getting a swinging strikeout for the final out of the season in the ninth.
It was an outstanding day defensively for the Aggies.
James Williams III threw out a runner at second with two on and no outs in the fourth.
Raul Sandoval followed with a putout in right field and threw out the Dirtbags' Peyton Schulze trying to tag up at home for a double play in the same inning. Williams III also threw out a base runner at second to end the third inning.
The Aggies turned double plays in the sixth and seventh innings, the latter coming coming with the bases loaded and one out.
UC Davis had baserunners in each of the last three innings on Saturday.
Mark Wolbert went 2-3, ending the season with his 16th multi-hit game and putting the finishing touches on a debut campaign that saw him hit .351 with a .925 OPS. Peng went 2-3 and Mico ended his collegiate career with a ninth-inning single to center field.
The Aggies finish their first season under Head Coach
Tommy Nicholson at 6-35 and 5-25 in the Big West.
