Davis, Calif. - UC Davis (15-9, 2-1) broke a 9-9 tie with less than minute remaining with a goal by
Emily Aikema to defeat CSUN 10-9 on Saturday afternoon in Davis.
Aikema's game winner came just 19 seconds after a five-meter penalty allowed the Matadors to tie the game at nine with 21 seconds to go. The Aggies did what showed a penchant for all afternoon, quickly moving the length of the pool to set up Aikema.
The Aggies' largest lead of the game came on an
Allyson Clague goal with 2:59 left in the thid period that made it an 8-4 game but CSUN chipped away at that lead by scoring three goals in the last three minutes of the period to trail 8-7 on a last second goal entering the fourth.
The Matadors made it a four-goal swing with 5:24 to go in the game, tying it at 8-8 before
Alyssa Lengtat put the Aggies back up by one with 56 seconds to go. CSUN answered by converting the five-meter but Aikema's heroics handed the Aggies their second Big West Conference win of the season.
Saturday's win moved UC Davis into third in the conference standings with three more games to go until the Big West tourament in Hawai'i. It was also the Aggies' fourth straight win after winning all three of their games in San Diego last weekend.
Aikema had a hat trick with three goals, Noelle Wijnebelt scored twice while Lengtat,
Julia Hartmann, and Clague scored a goal apiece.
It was the fourth straight winning decision for
Nellie McAdams who now sits at 6-4 on the season in goal.
UC Davis will go on the road next week to face Long Beach State and UC Irvine before finishing the regular season at home on April 16 against UC Santa Barbara.
