DAVIS, Calif. -- Behind the right arm of
Kenedi Brown and timely hitting, the UC Davis softball team (16-16, 4-4) swept a Big West doubleheader from CSU Bakersfield, Saturday at La Rue Field. The Aggies raced to an 8-1 victory in the opener and then came from behind to win game two, 7-4. The twin-bill marked the Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer initiative as both teams participated in the awareness effort.
Game 1
Brown (9-9) was phenomenal in the opener, striking out a career-high 17 batters en route to the victory. The sophomore surrendered one unearned run on just one hit, throwing 82 of her 115 pitches for strikes. The final 11 outs of the ballgame were via the punchout.
After falling behind on an unearned run in the fifth, the Aggies responded in a big way, plating five runs in the bottom half and then tacking on three more in the sixth to run away with the victory.
UC Davis took advantage of two CSUB errors and collected six hits in the frame to post the five runs. In the sixth,
Anna Dethlefson continued her power surge with the big hit, smacking a two-run homer over the wall in left.
Dethlefson batted 2-for-3 with two runs, while
Sarah Starks also added a pair of hits and drove in a run.
Game 2
The Roadrunners took an early 4-1 lead, but the Aggies rallied, scoring three runs in the fifth and tacking on two more in the sixth to seize the doubleheader sweep.
UC Davis used the long ball to power back into the game.
Grace Kilday connected on her first career home run, while Dethlefson cleared the wall once again to help the Aggies back into the game.
Kilday started the rally in the three-run fifth with a solo shot over the wall in left-center and then the Aggies took advantage of an error and totaled three hits in the frame to plate the three runs.
In the sixth, Kilday once again started the rally, doubling off the wall in right before Dethlefson doubled to left-center to score Kilday.
Libbie McMahan then brought in Dethlefson on a single to third.
Sarah Reineman kept the CSUB bats at bay as she only allowed one hit in her three innings of relief. The sophomore collected her second win on the season after spelling starter
Taylor Fitzgerald.
Dethelfson batted 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored, while Starks, McMahan, Kilday and
Reese Mattley also collected two hits apiece.
