BERKELEY, Calif. – The UC Davis softball team rallied all the way back from a first inning 7-0 deficit but eventually fell on a walk-off, 9-8, Tuesday afternoon at Levine-Fricke Field. After the day, the Aggies move to 18-22 on the season.
After the Aggies spotted the Golden Bears a touchdown in the first frame, UC Davis chipped away. The Aggies scored at least one run in every inning the rest of the way.
Down to their last strike in the contest,
Libbie McMahan came through for the Aggies on a full count as she singled up the middle to score
Sarah Nakahara. UC Davis nearly recorded the go-ahead run, but Sommer Kissling was called out on a bang-bang play at the plate. The play at the plate was the second of the inning where the Aggies were called out on a close play.
Cal eventually walked it off in the bottom of the seventh on a bloop single down the left field line with two outs.
Nakahara got UC Davis on the board on an RBI groundout. Kisling then hit an infield single to score
Reese Mattley.
In the third, Mattley smacked a double down the line in left to plate
Anna Dethlefson. The Ags tacked on another in the fourth when
Delaney Diaz singled up the middle to score Nakahara.
In the fifth, the Aggies made it a ballgame to pull within two when Mattley tallied another double to score
Sarah Starks. Nakahara then plated Mattley on an infield single to second.
In the sixth, UC Davis scored to pull within one when Diaz doubled to left-center to score McMahan.
The Aggies banged out a season-high 16 hits, outhitting Cal, 16-11.
Kissling and Nakahara collected three hits apiece, while McMahan, Diaz and Mattley had two. Diaz, Mattley and Nakahara also record multi-RBI games.
Kenedi Brown (11-13) was charged with the loss after allowing two runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings of relief.
Taylor Fitzgerald went three innings and allowed seven runs – four earned on five hits.
The Aggies will dive back into conference play when they head to UC San Diego for a three-game set that will begin on Friday, April 22.
