DAVIS, Calif. – The UC Davis softball team (12-13, 1-2) dropped its Big West Conference opening series to Cal State Fullerton (17-12, 2-1), falling in the rubber match, 2-0, Sunday afternoon from La Rue Field.
Sophomore pitcher
Kenedi Brown (6-8) surrendered her first earned run in 26 innings as she was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out six.
The Titans scored in the opening frame and then added another in the seventh on a bizarre home run. In the top of the seventh, Peyton Toto cleared the wall in left-center for what was an apparent home run. After confusion on the base paths, she was called out when she crossed paths with Payton Kelly, who by rule, was allowed to score.
The Aggies had chances in the first and threatened in the fifth, loading the bases with one out but were unable to push a run home. Senior
Claudia Kim got the inning going with a double off the wall in left-center and sophomore
Sarah Nakahara singled up the middle but a fly out to right ended the rally.
Kim batted 2-for-2 on the day while Nakahara and Dethlefson recorded the other two hits. Myka Sutherlin (6-4) earned the win, striking out seven in the complete game effort.
UC Davis will host Boise State on Wednesday, March 23, with first pitch slated for 3 p.m. at La Rue Field.
