Irvine, Calif. - UC Davis took a 3-1 lead into the fourth inning on Sunday against UC Irvine but dropped the final game of the three-game series 6-12.
It was an aggressive start for the Aggies (0-9) in the series finale against the Anteaters. UC Davis led off the game with three straight singles by
Kyler Arenado,
Nick Leehey and
Jonah Henrickson, with Henrickson's bouncer up the middle scoring Arenado.
The Anteaters answered with a double in the bottom of the second but a
James Williams III double scored Leehey and a subsequent throwing error on the play brought in Henrickson for a 3-1 lead.
UC Irvine responded quickly in the bottom of the fourth, tying the game at 3-3 within the first three pitches of the inning and putting up a five-spot to lead 3-6.
UC Davis wasn't done scoring, creating a run in the top of the fifth when Leehey walked and went first to third on a single by Henrickson, later scoring on a sac fly by
Jake Brandel. The Anteaters continued to tack on though, scoring in every inning from the fourth on.
The Aggies got runs in the eighth and ninth innings on a doubles by
Mark Wolbert and
J.D. Mico that scored
Nick Iverson and and Leehey respectively.
With the Big West Conference portion of the schedule underway, UC Davis will have a chance to get into a rhythm as this weekend's series was just the second time this season the Aggies have played on three consecutive days.
UC Davis will next host UC Santa Barbara Mar. 25-27 at Dobbins Stadium.
