Aggies Split Big West Opener with Cal State Fullerton

DAVIS, Calif. – The UC Davis softball team opened its Big West Conference season with a twin-bill against Cal State Fullerton Saturday at La Rue Field

The Aggies won the opener, 2-0, and then fell in the afternoon tilt, 6-3. Sophomore Anna Dethlefson led the Aggies with a 4-for-7 (.571) effort in the doubleheader with two runs scored and an RBI.

GAME 1

Sophomore pitcher Kenedi Brown continued her winning ways, throwing a complete game two-hitter with seven strikeouts. Brown has now allowed just three hits in her last 20 innings pitched, holding opponents scoreless with a 28-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

The Aggies did all their damage in the first inning, giving Brown all the support, she would need. Dethlefson set the tone by turning a leadoff hit-by-pitch into a run, while sophomore Bella Pahulu scored on an error.

GAME 2

After spotting the Titans a 2-0 lead in the second inning, the Aggies would respond with two runs of their own in the inning – one on a Claudia Kim single that scored Libbie McMahan and one on a Dethlefson sacrifice fly to left field that scored Reese Mattley.

The Aggies would gain the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on a Sarah Starks single up the middle that scored Dethlefson.

The Titans would score four runs in the top of the seventh for the final tally. Sommer Kisling, Mattley and Starks all went 2-4 in the second game. Mattley scored a run and Starks had a RBI.

The two teams will meet tomorrow in the final game of the series at noon.
