Davis, Calif. - No. 10 UC Davis fell 13-5 (11-9, 0-1) to No. 5 Hawai'i in Friday's Big West Conference opener at Schaal Aquatic Center.
The Aggies got scores from
Jordan Werkmeister,
Kelly Hungerford,
Alyssa Lengtat,
Sam Yoo and
Allyson Clague while Hungerford added two assists to lead UC Davis.
It was Hungerford's fourth straight game with two assists and Lengtat's fifth straight game with at least one goal.
The Rainbow Wahine jumped out to a 3-0 lead through the first period but UC Davis battled back in the second period. Clague scored off a Hungerford assist with 2:14 to go and Hungerford found the back of the net with
Emily Aikema on the helper to pull within 3-2 with 1:06 to go until the half.
Hawai'i responded with three straight power play goals though and led 7-2 at the break.
Lengtat had the first score of the third with Hungerford getting her second assist, and Hawai'i again responded with two straight to hold off a comeback attempt. Werkmeister had the final score of the third period and Yoo's goal came with 3:14 left in the fourth.
The Aggies will go two weeks between contests as the next match on the schedule is a road trip to San Diego where UC Davis will face UC San Diego on Mar. 25 and then Azuza Pacific and San Diego State at the Aztec Invite on Mar. 26.
