Davis, Calif. - Ezra Manjon scored 20 points and the Aggies came up with big play after big play down the stretch to knock off the Big West-leading Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors 68-65 on Saturday at University Credit Union Center.
Elijah Pepper had 19 points and
Christian Anigwe added 16 points and five rebounds as they teamed with Manjon to account for 80 percent of the Aggies' points.
Tied at 62-62 following a Hawai'i free throw with 1:55 to go, a driving lay-up by Manjon put the Aggies (10-7, 3-3) up 64-62 with 1:47 left. An offensive foul at the other end got the ball back with UC Davis and another Rainbow Warrior (11-7, 6-2) foul put Manjon at the line to increase the lead to 65-62 with 34 seconds to go.
The Aggies forced a miss and a
Caleb Fuller rebound that led to another foul and a free throw for Pepper increased the lead to 66-62 with 18 seconds remaining. A driving lay-up and an and-one free throw by Hawai'i cut that to 66-65 with 13 seconds left but Manjon sank another free throw 67-65.
That set up
Ade Adebayo for a game-saving block on a three-point try with seven seconds left and Fuller was fouled going for the rebound to ice the game for UC Davis.
UC Davis committed its second-fewest turnovers in a game this season with just six, only two of which were Hawai'i steals and none led to points for the Rainbow Warriors. Seven of Hawai'i's 13 turnovers were on steals and the Aggies turned those into 12 points on the other end.
The Aggies trailed 41-51 with 8:58 to go before a 15-2 UC Davis run thanks in large part to a red hot Pepper.
Pepper scored 10 points during the run, including threes on back-to-back possessions to give UC Davis a 56-53 lead with 5:23 to play.
Hawai'i came in to Saturday evening sharing the Big West Conference lead at 6-1 but fell to the same UC Riverside team on Thursday that the Aggies beat on Feb. 1. Saturday's win keeps the Aggies firmly in the hunt in the conference as four teams below them have just one conference win and a fifth, UC San Diego, does not count towards the conference standings.
The Aggies will head out on a southern California trip next week going to UC San Diego on Feb. 10 and UC Irvine on Feb. 12 before enjoying a four-game homestand.
