Aggies never trail in win over first-place Anteaters

Hall posts her second-straight 20-point game to lead four UC Davis players in double figures

DAVIS, Calif. -- Senior Cierra Hall finished with her second-straight 20-point game, leading a quartet of UC Davis players in double figures as the Aggies never trailed in a 66-51victory over first-place UC Irvine on Saturday afternoon at the University Credit Union Center.

It was the second-straight victory for UC Davis, which improved to 11-9 overall and 5-5 in Big West Conference play, winning for the eighth time in 11 games within the friendly confines this year. The Aggies shot just under 47 percent from the field for the game -- including 6-of-7 from the floor in the opening quarter -- while limiting the Anteaters to just 32 percent for the contest.

The win gave Head Coach Jennifer Gross her 112th career Big West Conference victory, moving her into sole possession of fifth place on the league's all-time conference wins list. Gross now has 197 career victories, just three shy of making her only the fifth head coach in Big West history to reach 200 victories as a member of the league.

Led by 17 points from Kayla Williams, UC Irvine fell to 14-9 overall and 9-3 in league play.

Coming off a 20-point game in a win over UC San Diego on Thursday night, Hall's performance on Saturday was her fourth with 20-or-more points this season, hitting 5-of-6 from the field, 2-of-3 from beyond the arc, and 8-of-11 from the line. She added six rebounds, three ssists, a pair of steals, and two blocks to her statline in 36 minutes.

Seniors Kayla Konrad and Sage Stobbart, along with sophomore Evanne Turner, each chipped in 10 points apiece, as UC Davis finished with four in double figures for the sixth time this year. Hall, Stobbart, Turner, and Lena Svanholm, each grabbed six rebounds apiece, helping the Aggies to a 40-32 advantage on the glass, while Turner dished out a team-high four assists.

UC Davis never trailed in the contest, leading for all but 89 seconds of Saturday's battle. The Aggies led by 10 points after one quarter and pushed that lead to as many as 17 later in the second half, leading 35-18 at the break after closing the second quarter on a 9-0 run.

That run continued into a third as a Sydney Burns triple to start the period made it 12 consecutive points and the home team was off to the races. UC Davis never let UC Irvine get closer than 16 points for nearly the rest of regulation as an 8-0 burst by the Anteaters in the final 90 seconds closed the gap to 13 before Makaila Sanders sank a lay-up just before the end of the game for the final tally.

UC Davis opens a stretch of four consecutive games away from the University Credit Union Center next week, heading to the Central Coast to take on Cal Poly on Thursday (Feb. 17) at 7 p.m., before heading inland to take on CSU Bakersfield on Saturday (Feb. 19) at 1 p.m.
