DAVIS, Calif. – The UC Davis men's tennis team claimed the Causeway Cup after downing rival Sacramento State, 4-3, Friday afternoon from the Mayra Welch Tennis Center.
After the Aggies dropped the doubles point, they protected their home court in singles, erasing a 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead after four singles matches.
Junior Andrei Volgin earned the first UC Davis win on the day, downing Mark Keki at the No. 1 spot, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Fellow junior Andras Necz rallied after dropping the first set to handle Ori Maior, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. The Aggies then took the lead when freshman Ryan Morgan won at No. 5 against Patrick Wong, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Sacramento State then reclaimed the lead, but another freshman came through in the clutch for UC Davis. Newcomer Ryan Torres dropped the first set to Mate Voros but then claimed the second set, 6-3. Torres then sent the Aggies celebrating en route to hoisting the Causeway Cup trophy after winning the final set in thrilling fashion, 7-6.
The Aggies continue their homestand with two matches tomorrow. UC Davis will welcome Saint Mary's at 10:30 a.m., and then face Holy Names at 2:30 p.m.
