DAVIS, Calif. -- Senior
Cierra Hall posted her sixth double-double of the season, finishing with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while
Lena Svanholm and
Sydney Burns also added double figures, helping lift UC Davis to a wire-to-wire 51-42 Big West Conference victory over UC San Diego on Thursday night at the University Credit Union Center.
The Aggies snapped a brief two-game skid, improving to 10-9 overall and 4-5 in league play despite shooting just 29 percent from the field. UC Davis made up for it by dominating the glass, outrebounding the Tritons, 51-37, setting a season high on the glass for the third consecutive contest.
Led by 13 points from Julia Macabuhay, UC San Diego fell to 9-11 overall and 6-5 in league play.
Hall finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds on the night, hitting 5-of-10 from the field and sinking all eight of her free throw attempts. It was the senior's third 20-point game of the season and her eighth with at least 10 rebounds.
Burns was close to her first career double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing eight rebounds, while Svanholm hit 4-of-9 from the field and a pair of three-pointers en route to her 12 points. Senior
Sage Stobbart added eight rebounds and a season-high five blocks to go with a pair of steals.
The Aggies never trailed, opening up a 12-2 advantage following a slow start and leading 27-21 at the break after turning away a late Triton surge in the second quarter.Â
UC San Diego made it a three-point game on a couple of occasions early in the third quarter, but a pair of baskets by Hall and another from Svanholm rebuilt the lead to nine points, forcing a UCSD timeout. The Tritons closed out the quarter with back-to-back buckets, but Burns hit a pair to start the fourth quarter, giving the Aggies another nine-point lead with 6:38 to play.
That advantage would not last as a 9-2 burst by UC San Diego trimmed the UC Davis lead to just two points at 42-40 with 2:54 to play, but that would be as close as the Tritons would get. Hall then caught fire, scoring her team's next nine points to ice the victory.
UC Davis closes out the week on Saturday (Feb. 12) at 2 p.m., welcoming UC Irvine to the University Credit Union Center.
