DAVIS, Calif. -- The UC Davis women's basketball team went into the fourth quarter tied 47-47 with UC Riverside, but could not take control and fell 61-59 to the Highlanders at home Tuesday.
The Aggies (9-8, 3-4) had three players score in double figures, led by Evanne Turner, who had 16 points. Sage Stobbart tacked on 14 points, seven rebounds and two blocks and Cierra Hall helped out with 13 points, a career-high eight assists and three steals.
Stobbart pulled down two offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for UC Davis, grabbing 10 boards and turning them into three second chance points.
UC Davis takes to the skies on Wednesday, flying to Honolulu to take on Hawai'i on Thursday (Feb. 3) at 9 p.m. PT.
How It Happened
After falling behind 4-0, UC Davis went on a 5-0 run with 7:01 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Turner, to take a 5-4 lead. The Aggies then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 19-10.
UC Riverside kept adding to that lead, building a 24-12 advantage before UC Davis went on a 15-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Hall, to take a 27-24 lead, a score that would hold until halftime. UC Davis was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 17 points.
UC Davis surrendered its halftime lead until, with the game tied at 27-27 they went on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a three from Turner, to grab a 35-27 lead with 7:39 to go in the third. The Highlanders then rallied to tie it at 47-47 heading into the fourth quarter. UC Davis knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 20 total points.
UC Davis started the fourth with a bang, going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Stobbart's three, to seize a 52-47 lead with 9:14 to go in the contest. UC Riverside then asserted control, outscoring the Aggies 14-7 the rest of the way to hand UC Davis the 61-59 loss. UC Davis fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 12 points.
