Aggies hold off UC Riverside for big conference win

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Caleb Fuller knocked down a dagger jumper with 56 seconds left in the game to put UC Davis ahead 61-53, and the Aggies secured a 65-60 victory against the UC Riverside Highlanders on the road Tuesday night.

The Aggies (9-7, 2-3) had four players score in double figures, led by Ezra Manjon, who had 19 points and five assists. Fuller had on 14 points, eight rebounds and two blocks and Elijah Pepper helped out with 12 points.

The UC Davis defense held UC Riverside shooters to only 37.3 percent from the field, including 26.3 percent from three-point range. 

Leading 17-16 in the first half, UC Davis went on an 11-0 run with 9:03 left before the break, culminating in a three from Fuller, to increase its lead to 28-16. Despite a late spurt from the Highlanders UC Davis entered the locker room leading 32-22.

The Aggies kept the lead intact to start the second half before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Pepper's jumper, to grow the lead to 38-26 with 17:02 to go in the contest. UC Davis led by as many as 50-34 with 10:02 to go but an 11-1 run by UC Riverside made it 51-45 with 6:36 to go. Milling responded with a three but the Highlanders went on another 6-0 run to get within 56-53 with 2:35 to go. 

But Fuller hit a three with 2:06 to go and another jumper with 56 seconds to go to put the game out of reach at 61-53. 

The win was significant as at 2-3, it keeps the Aggies in the hunt in the conference as the regular season enters its final week. The Aggies have now played three straight games for the first time since December and will face Hawai'i at home on Saturday.
