MORAGA, CA --The UC Davis women's basketball team continued its road trip with a 58-53 loss to the Saint Mary's Gaels on Saturday.
The Aggies (3-4) had two players score in double figures, led by Evanne Turner, who had 17 points, six rebounds and three steals. Tova Sabel added 12 points and six rebounds off of the bench and Mazatlan Harris added four points and nine rebounds.
UC Davis grabbed 47 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Saint Mary's (CA)'s 37, led by Harris' nine boards. The Aggies also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 14 rebounds into eight second chance points.
UC Davis' defense held Saint Mary's (CA) to only 16.7 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 31 percent from the field.
How It Happened
After falling behind 9-5, UC Davis went on a 6-0 run with 4:14 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Sabel, to take an 11-9 lead, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. UC Davis relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 11 points.
Saint Mary's (CA) rallied to take a 21-17 lead before UC Davis went on a 5-0 run starting at the 2:42 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Turner, to take a 22-21 lead. The Gaels then came roaring back to take a 24-22 lead heading into halftime.
UC Davis came out of halftime on fire, going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Sydney Burns, to grab a 27-24 lead with 7:54 to go in the third. The Gaels then rallied to tie it at 40-40 heading into the fourth quarter. UC Davis played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 18 points in the paint.
UC Davis started the fourth with a bang, going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Sabel's layup, to seize a 48-40 lead with 7:25 to go in the contest. Saint Mary's (CA) then asserted control, outscoring the Aggies 18-5 the rest of the way to hand UC Davis the 58-53 loss. UC Davis took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 13 points in the paint.
