Aggies Drop Conference Opener to Hawai'i, 70-62

DAVIS, CA --The UC Davis women's basketball team dropped its Big West Conference opener 70-62 to the Rainbow Wahine at home Thursday.

The Aggies (4-7, 0-1) had two players score in double figures, led by Victoria Baker, who had 16 points and two steals. Tova Sabel added 15 points off of the bench and Sydney Burns added nine points and six rebounds.

How It Happened

After playing to a 5-5 tie early in the game, UC Davis went on a 10-0 run with 4:04 left in the first quarter to take a 15-5 lead. The Aggies then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 23-12 advantage. UC Davis got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 18 of its 23 total points.

The Aggies maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 35-32 edge. UC Davis dominated in the paint, scoring six of its 12 points close to the basket.

Hawaii then took a 47-35 lead following intermission before UC Davis went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Evanne Turner, to trim its deficit to 47-41 with 1:45 to go in the third. The Aggies continued to reduce the Hawaii lead, shrinking it to 49-45 by the end of the third quarter. UC Davis played well near the basket, scoring six of its 10 points in the paint.

UC Davis could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 70-62. UC Davis got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring 12 of its 17 total points.

The Aggies will return to conference action on Thursday, Jan. 5, at Irvine.
