IRVINE, Calif. -The UC Davis women's basketball team opened the new calendar year with a 67-38 loss on the road at UC Irvine on Thursday evening.
Evanne Turner led the Aggies (4-8, 0-2) with eight points and Nya Epps helped out with four points and two steals off of the bench. Megan Jones chipped two points and three blocks.
Mazatlan Harris pulled down three offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for UC Davis, grabbing 13 boards and turning them into eight second chance points.
The Aggies defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Thursday's game, forcing 16 UC Irvine turnovers.
How It Happened
After falling behind, 15-10, UC Davis went on a 6-0 run with 1:03 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Sydney Burns, to take a 16-15 lead, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. UC Davis did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 16 points close to the basket.
The Aggies could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 34-22.
UC Davis' deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Aggies faced a 49-33 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. UC Davis' bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled seven of the team's 11 third-quarter points.
