Aggies Drop Heartbreaker as NAU Snatches Victory in Final Seconds

DAVIS, Calif - Tova Sabel scored a career-high 30 points, but the UC Davis women's basketball team fell to the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks in heartbreaking fashion, 83-81 at the University Credit Union Center on Monday.

The Aggies (4-6) had three players score in double figures, led by Sabel, who had 30 points. Evanne Turner tacked on 13 points and six assists and Sydney Burns chipped in as well with 11 points and four assists.

UC Davis shared the ball well in Monday's game, racking up 16 assists on 29 made field goals. Turner's six assists led the Aggies and Burns also chipped in with four assists of her own.

The UC Davis defense was a problem in Monday's game, forcing 13 Northern Arizona turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 15 points on the offensive end of the floor. Megan Jones' three steals led the way individually for the Aggies.

How It Happened

UC Davis kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 20-17.

Northern Arizona kept adding to that lead, building a 35-29 advantage before UC Davis went on an 8-0 run to take a 37-35 lead. The Aggies proceeded to tack on three points to that lead and enjoyed a 44-39 advantage heading into halftime. UC Davis saw non-starters score 14 of its 27 total points off the bench in the quarter.

UC Davis continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Sabel, to expand its lead further to 55-43 with 5:16 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Aggies added two points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 67-53 edge. UC Davis played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 23 points in the paint.

Northern Arizona then erased the UC Davis lead in the game's final quarter for an 83-81 comeback victory. UC Davis fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 14 points.
