Defensive Effort Leads UC Davis Past William Jessup, 76-30

DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis held William Jessup to only 20 percent shooting from the field and the Aggies took down the Warriors, 76-30, at the University Credit Union Center Thursday evening.

The Aggies (4-5) had two players score in double figures, led by Evanne Turner, who had 18 points. Nya Epps tacked on 13 points off of the bench and Tess Sussman added six points and 13 rebounds.

UC Davis grabbed 58 rebounds in Thursday's game compared to William Jessup's 32, led by Sussman's 13. The Aggies also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 13 rebounds into eight second chance points.

UC Davis' defense held William Jessup to only 20 percent shooting from the field, including 10 percent from beyond the arc.

How It Happened

After falling behind, 11-1, UC Davis went on a 14-0 run with 4:59 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Victoria Baker, to take a 15-11 lead. UC Davis relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 15 points.

William Jessup fought back to tie the game at 15-15 before UC Davis went on a 21-0 run, starting at the 8:35 mark in the second period to take a 36-15 lead, a score that would hold until halftime. UC Davis was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 21 points.

Following intermission, UC Davis continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 49-22 before going on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a three from Turner, to expand its lead further to 58-22 with 55 seconds to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Warriors had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Aggies still entered the fourth quarter with a 58-25 edge. UC Davis knocked down four three-pointers in the quarter to score 12 of its 22 total points.

UC Davis started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on a 15-0 run, finished off by Makaila Sanders' layup, to grow the lead to 73-25 with 3:01 to go in the contest. The Warriors narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Aggies still cruised the rest of the way for the 76-30 win. UC Davis took advantage of seven William Jessup turnovers in the quarter, scoring eight points off of those takeaways.
