DAVIS, Calif. – UC Davis senior running back
Ulonzo Gilliam, Jr. was named the FedEx Ground FCS National Offensive Player of the Week and the Big Sky Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week for his stellar performance at No. 15 Idaho this past weekend.
Gilliam, Jr. recorded three rushing touchdowns on the strength of 164 yards on 30 carries. The Merced native eclipsed 100 rushing yards in the first half and helped lead the way for an Aggie rushing attack that amassed 251 yards on the ground on the day.
On his first score of the game, he broke the UC Davis rushing touchdown record of 40 that was held by Preston Jackson (1991-93). The senior captain also eclipsed 1,000 yards on the ground for the season – the second time in his career.
To his name, Gilliam, Jr. has broken the all-purpose, rushing yards, scoring, rushing touchdowns, and total touchdowns by a non-quarterback program records. He enters the Causeway Classic with 1,132 rushing yards on 183 carries with 12 touchdowns. Gilliam, Jr. leads the team with 1,485 all-purpose yards and has scored 50 career touchdowns. He is on the verge of eclipsing 6,000 all-purpose yards for his career, as he boasts 5,965 entering this weekend's contest.
The UC Davis football team (6-4, 5-2), winners of five straight, will make the short trek to face rival and No. 2 ranked Sacramento State (10-0, 7-0) on Saturday, Nov. 19 at Hornet Stadium. The Causeway Classic will kick off at 2 p.m.
