IN THE RANKINGS: Michigan State enters the season ranked No. 36 in the nation according to the 2022 WCGA Preseason Coaches Poll... UC Davis and Sacramento State are unranked, but are listed among those receiving votes along with Mountain Pacific Sports Federation rivals San Jose State and defending conference champion Air Force -- the only two teams to compete in 2021.
WE'RE BACK!: 674 days. Just over 22 months. Nearly 97 weeks. A total of 16,176 hours, which translates into 970,560 minutes. No matter how you measure it, it's been a while since the Aggies were able to take the floor after the COVID pandemic wiped out the final two meets of UC Davis' 2020 season and all of the 2021 campaign was nixed due to a Yolo County Health Order. The Aggies' last competition was a dual meet win over Mountain Pacific Sports Federation rival Sacramento State back on March 7, 2020, as UC Davis scored a 194.875 to the Hornets' 194.225 in Sacramento, while Sunday's tri-meet will be the first at home for the Aggies since scoring a 194.600 in a win over San Jose State on Feb. 7, 2020.
WATCH THIS!: A pair of UC Davis gymnasts were named as two to "watch" this season as the MPSF unveiled its 2022 Gymnasts to Watch list prior to the start of the year. Senior
Kyla Kessler, who is expected to see action for the first time since 2019, is joined by freshman
Keanna Abraham on the list. Kessler was an All-MPSF first team selection on vault (9.780 RQS) and a second-team selection on floor (9.810 RQS) as a freshman in 2018, but in coming off a season-ending injury in 2019 that put her on the sidelines after six meets. Bakersfield, Calif., native Abraham competed for the Central California Gymnastics Institute in Visalia, Calif., where she was a Level 10 National Qualifier in 2021 and finished first in the all-around at the Level 9 Westerns in 2017.
CHAMPIONSHIP READY: UC Davis plays host to the 2022 MPSF Championships on March 19 at the University Credit Union Center -- welcoming the conference to Davis for the first time since 2014, when the Aggies finished second. UC Davis has won six MPSF titles, with the last coming in 2015 with a score of 195.300 at Alaska-Anchorage. The Aggies also claimed team titles in 2008 (194.700), 2010 (194.150), 2011 (192.975), 2012 (193.675), and 2013 (194.950), and were named regular season champions in 2020 with a final national qualifying score of 194.715 after the championship meet was canceled due to the pandemic. In addition, UC Davis has had 21 student-athletes claim a total of 34 individual conference titles.
