UC Davis sinks San Jose State in overtime before swamping Long Beach State in Berkeley

BERKELEY, Calif. -- Junior goalkeeper Sophia Noble finished with 26 saves and a .605 save percentage on the day, while the Aggies' offense capped off a high-scoring start to the Cal Cup with a combined 28 goals, as No. 13 UC Davis posted wins over No. 12 San Jose State and No. 13 Long Beach State on Saturday at the Spieker Aquatics Center in Berkeley, Calif.

Kelly Hungerford scored three times and added three assists for six points of her own, while Emily Aikema led the team with four assists to go with a pair of scores.

#13 UC DAVIS 14, #12 SAN JOSE STATE 13 (OT)
Noelle Wijnbelt finished with five goals, Allyson Clague netted the eventual game-winner with 62 seconds remaining in the first overtime, and Emily Aikema and Julia Hartmann came up huge with blocks in the final overtime to preserve a 14-13 victory over San Jose State to start the day.

The win didn't come easy as UC Davis had to climb out of a four-goal halftime hole to force overtime, winning the third quarter, 3-1, after Wijnbelt scored twice to complete the hat trick and Hailey Williams found the back of the cage to make it a two-goal deficit heading to the fourth.

After a Hartmann win on the sprint, Hungerford and Aikema scored back-to-back goals around a San Jose State (4-2 overall) offensive foul to tie the match at nine apiece. The two teams them traded goals as Clague's first of the day knotted the match at 10-all before the Spartans threatened to run away and hide with back-to-back goals of their own to regain a two-goal advantage.

The Aggies didn't go away quietly as Grace Pelkey converted off of one of Aikema's three assists on the day and Wijnbelt cashed in a 5-meter with 55 seconds remaining to tie things up at 12 apiece.

Alyssa Lengtat then swiped one of her three steals on SJSU's next possession, but scoring chances by Sam Yoo and Aikema to win in it regulation were denied, sending the two teams to overtime.

Wijnbelt got the scoring started off the sprint in the first overtime and the Spartans answered three possessions later to make it 13-13. Just 22 seconds later, Clague gave UC Davis the lead for good, converting a pass from Hartmann for a 14-13 advantage the Aggies would not relinquish, and Noble stopped San Jose State on the powerplay after an exclusion with 48 seconds to go in the first overtime.

Hungerford took the ball away from San Jose State after the Spartans won the sprint to start the second overtime and the Aggies drew an exclusion with 2:29 play looking to extend the lead, but a turnover out of a timeout ended that hope.

The UC Davis defense then came up huge as Hartmann knocked down a scoring attempt after an exclusion against the Aggies with just over a minute to play and Aikema followed suit after SJSU got the ball back out of a timeout with 26 seconds remaining, knocking down Riley Agerbeek's bid for a fourth goal on the day to end the match.
