Aggies win thriller over Tigers to close Cal Cup

Clague with her third game-winner of the weekend as UC Davis tops Pacific

BERKELEY, Calif. -- Junior Noelle Wijnbelt finished with a team-high four goals to go with five drawn exclusions and five steals, while senior Allyson Clague added a pair of goals -- including the game-winner in her team's second match of the day, helping No. 13 UC Davis split its final two matches at the Cal Cup in Berkeley, Calif., on Sunday.

The Aggies moved to 5-1 overall on the season, off to the program's best start since the 2007 squad opened 6-0 through its first six matches, falling to No. 8 Fresno State by a 10-6 score before putting together a huge rally for a 6-5 win over No. 15 Pacific in the nightcap.

Wijnbelt's four scores extended her team-high total to 19 goals through the team's first six matches as the junior is shooting .594 overall with 11 drawn exclusions in that stretch. After the weekend, the Tustin, Calif., native now ranks fifth on the school's all-time goals scored list with 164, standing just 11 shy of Christi Raycraft (2005-08) for fourth.

Clague's game-winner against the Tigers was her third of the weekend after she posted the go-ahead score in overtime against San Jose State and accounted for the Aggies' sixth goal in a 14-5 win over Long Beach State on Saturday.

Freshman Sam Yoo scored the first two goals of her career in the opener against the Bulldogs, while Julia Hartmann, Tess Fundter, Hailey Williams, and Grace Pelkey, also found the back of the cage on the day.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Sophia Noble finished with 19 saves and a .559 save percentage on Sunday, collecting her third double-digit save total of the year with 10 stops in the opener against Fresno State.

UC Davis makes a return trip to the Bay Area next weekend, taking on a pair of Pac-12 Conference rivals on Saturday (Feb. 5) at the Stanford Invite. The Aggies open against Arizona State at 11:45 a.m., before taking on California at 3:30 p.m.

#8 FRESNO STATE 10, #13 UC DAVIS 6
Noelle Wijnbelt and Sam Yoo each scored a pair of goals, but a 5-0 run by the Bulldogs spanning the third and fourth quarters allowed Fresno State (2-5) to pull away in the second half for a 10-6 triumph in the opening match of the day.

After surrendering the first goals of the match, Wijnbelt scored on the power play and Yoo scored the first goal of her career to bring the Aggies even at 2-2 with 70 seconds remaining in the opening period. Fresno State answered with a score 20 seconds later for the one goal advantage at the end of one and rebuilt its lead to two scores in a low-scoring second quarter, making it 4-2 at the 2:16 mark.

Hailey Williams clawed one of the goals back with her first of the match a minute later, but Emily Nicholson took advantage of a powerplay to make it 5-3 in favor of the Bulldogs at the break.

Wijnbelt then scored on a 5-meter to kick-off the scoring in the second half, but that would be the last score for the Aggies for a while as Fresno State scored the next five goals to pull away. Grace Pelkey and Yoo would add scores in the final minute to inch UC Davis closer.

The Aggies held a 30-28 shot advantage for the match.

#13 UC DAVIS 6, #15 PACIFIC 5
Senior Allyson Clague scored the go-ahead goal with 2:59 remaining in regulation to cap a 4-0 run by the Aggies as UC Davis erased a three-goal deficit en route to a 6-5 win over rival Pacific (0-4 overall) to split the final day of the Cal Cup.

The Aggies trailed 5-2 midway through the third quarter before battling all the way back for the win, starting the rally on a goal by Tess Fundter at the 3:37 mark to close the gap.

Just over a minute later, Clague netted her first of the day to make it a one-goal contest and Wijnbelt converted a 5-meter just 49 seconds into the fourth quarter to the the match. Both teams went back and forth before the Aggies were able to draw an exclusion with 3:09 to play, setting up Clague on the powerplay, who put home a pass from Emily Aikema for the eventual game-winner 10 seconds later.

UC Davis then forced a pair of turnovers on the Tigers' next two possessions, got some help from the woodwork on a third, and goalkeeper Sophia Noble denied Pacific's Hila Futorian with her ninth save of the day on the Tigers' last chance to end the match.

The Aggies held a 30-21 advantage in shots and limited Pacific to just 1-for-8 on the powerplay for the contest.
