Aggies hold off first-place Beach for big road win

Turner and Hall both finish with double-doubles as UC Davis downs Long Beach State

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Sophomore Evanne Turner collected her first career double-double, while senior Cierra Hall nearly logged a triple-double herself, helping the UC Davis women's basketball hold off league-leading Long Beach State for a 68-58 road victory on Saturday afternoon at the Walter Pyramid.

The Aggies split their Southern California roadtrip, improving to 9-7 overall and 3-3 in Big West Conference play. Led by 21 points from Justina King, the Beach fell to 13-3 overall and suffered only their second conference defeat of the year, falling to 6-2.

Turner, who finished with 20 points two nights earlier at Cal State Fullerton, drained five three-pointers and hit all four of her free throws en route to her team-high 19 points, hitting 5-of-11 from the field and adding a career-high 10 rebounds in 37 minutes.

Hall, meanwhile fell just three assists shy of finishing with only the second triple-double in school history, chipping in 14 points on 5-of-10 from the floor while grabbing 14 rebounds and dishing out seven assists in 40 minutes of play. It marked the Cypress, Calif., native's fifth double-double of the year and the 11th of her career.

Her 14 points moved her to within three of Colleen Turnbull (1999-03) for No. 14 on the Aggies' all-time scoring list, but Hall's 14 rebounds were more than enough to push her past Turnbull for second on the school's career rebounds list with 803, trailing only Carol Rische's record of 1,028.

Seniors Sage Stobbart and Kayla Konrad also finished in double figures with the former scoring 13 points to go with nine rebounds and the latter adding 10 points, six rebounds, and four assists.

The Aggies never trailed on Saturday, leading by as many as 19 points twice en route to the victory while holding Long Beach State to just 17 combined points -- eight in the first and nine in the second -- and 24 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes.

Adjustments were made and the Beach gradually chipped away at the UC Davis advantage in the third, using an 11-2 run to trim a 17-point lead down to single digits with just under four minutes to play in the period. A Turner triple turned up the heat once again, sparking an 11-0 run by the Aggies to finish the quarter, giving UC Davis a 53-34 leading heading into the final 10 minutes.

After trading baskets to start the fourth, Long Beach State caught fire as a three by King keyed a 14-0 run, turning the tables on the Aggies and making it a five-point game at 55-50 with 4:15 to play. Hall answered with back-to-back baskets to rebuilt the advantage to nine, but another three -- this one by Jasmine Hardy -- stopped the bleeding and three more free throws by King, who was fouled on a three-point attempt brought the gap back down to five with 2:08 to play.

It then became a free throw shooting contest from that point on and UC Davis was just a bit better, hitting 8-of-10 down the stretch from the line -- the final four of those off the hand of Turner -- and holding the Beach to 0-for-5 from the field the rest of the way.

Overall, UC Davis shot 50 percent from the field, including seven three-pointers, while limiting Long Beach State to just 32 percent overall. The Aggies also outrebounded the Beach, 46-26, for the game.

It's a somewhat quick turnaround for UC Davis, which hosts UC Riverside on Tuesday evening (Feb. 1) at 4 p.m., before jetting off to the islands to take on Hawai'i on Thursday (Feb. 3) at 9 p.m. PT.
