FULLERTON, Calif. -- Sophomore
Evanne Turner finished with a team-high 20 points to lead a group of three Aggies in double figures, but a 12-0 run midway through the third quarter helped home-standing Cal State Fullerton erase a five-point deficit and take the lead for good, lifting the Titans to a 69-65 victory over UC Davis on Thursday night at Titan Gym.
The Aggies fell to 8-7 overall and 2-3 in league play, shooting just under 41 percent from the field for the night. The Titans, meanwhile, shot better than 43 percent and out-rebounded UC Davis 38-34 en route to improving to 7-9 overall and 2-4 in conference.
Turner logged her 10th double-digit scoring performance of the season -- and her second 20-point game of the year -- with her team-high total, hitting 6-of-16 on the night, including four three-pointers, and a perfect 4-for-4 from the line. She added five rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals, to her stat line in 39 minutes.
Senior
Cierra Hall logged her 12th double-digit performance of the season and her sixth straight, finishing with 18 points and eight rebounds to go with a pair of assists. She hit 6-of-11 from the field and 5-of-7 from the line, averaging 18.7 points and 7.8 rebounds in her last six contests.
The 18 points moved her past Brenda Wyneken (1981-84) and into 15th place on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,120 career points, standing 17 points back of Colleen Turnbull (1999-03) for No. 14 on the career list. Her eight rebounds also give her 789 for her career, just one back of Turnbull for second on the all-time list.
Senior
Sage Stobbart rounded out the double-digit trio for the Aggies, finishing with 10 points, nine rebounds, and three blocked shots, hitting 4-of-5 from the floor.
UC Davis trailed only twice by a single point in the first half, eventually leading by as many as seven points on three occasions in the second quarter before holding on for a 35-34 advantage at the break.
The Aggies held a five-point advantage on a Hall jumper with 4:59 to play in the third before the Titans rallied to take the lead for good. A lay-up by Carolyn Gill sparked the decisive 12-0 run and Fullerton led by six with 10 minutes to play, eventually building a seven-point, 58-51, advantage and never looking back.
UC Davis closed to within three points on a basket inside by Turner with just under two minutes gone in the fourth period, but that would be as close as the Aggies would come. Fullerton shot just 18 percent (2-for-11) in the final quarter, but hit 9-of-14 from the line to hold off any UC Davis rally.
The Aggies return to the court on Saturday, closing out their Southern California roadtrip against league-leading Long Beach State at 2 p.m. The Beach defeated UC Riverside, 56-46, on Thursday.
