Davis, Calif. - The Aggies opened the 2022 season in mid-season form on Saturday, running away to 25-5 and 18-5 wins over CSU Monterey Bay and Fresno Pacific respectively.
Saturday's games were part of a four-game slate as UC Davis (2-0) played host for the Aggie Invite at Schaal Aquatic Center.
Against the CSU Monterey Bay Otters, the Aggies scored early and often.
Noelle Wijnbelt opened the scoring with a power play goal just 29 seconds into the game and by the halfway mark of the first period, the Aggies led 3-1.
During a stretch that spanned the end of the first period and all but 1:29 of the second, UC Davis scored eight unanswered goals and led 13-3 at the half. Wijnbelt led the charge, scoring a career-high seven goals while a whopping seven Aggies scored multiple goals and 11 Aggies in all found the back of the net. UC Davis' 25 goals against the Otters were a single-game program record.
Julia Hartmann had three goals and two helpers,
Hailey Williams finished with a hat trick while
Kelly Hungerford,
Emily Aikema,
Makenna Ferguson, and
Grace Gulsvig each had two goals.
Alyssa Lengtat,
Tess Fundter,
Allyson Clague, and
Ryan Sund each scored once as the Aggies finished the game scoring on 64 percent of their shots.
Ferguson also had three assists while Hartmann, Clague and
Jordan Werkmeister each contributed two helpers.
The Aggies didn't slow down in the afternoon against Fresno Pacific.
Alyssa Langtat scored twice in the sixth minute of the first period to get the Aggies out to a quick 2-0 lead. UC Davis then scored six unanswered over a 2:53 stretch in the second period to lead 13-4 at the break.
While Fresno Pacific opened the scoring in the second half, the Aggies scored the final five points of the game to coast to a comfortable win.
This time it was Lengtat leading the charge with five goals and one assist, while Aikema and
Hailey Williams each had hat tricks.
Grace Pelkey scored two goals and Wijnbelt added two to bring her one-day total to nine goals. Hungerford had one score and two assists, Hartmann and
Ashley Salem scored one apiece, and Gulsvig,
Tess Fundter, and Clague each had a helper as the Aggies assisted on half of their goals against the Sunbirds.
Next up for the Aggies is a two-day stint at Spieker Aquatics Complex for the Cal Cup in Berkeley on Jan. 29 and Jan. 30.
