Aggies’ streak snapped in overtime

UC Davis hosts Cal Poly on Sunday to close out the weekend

DAVIS, Calif. — UC Davis and visiting UC Santa Barbara battled to a scoreless draw through 90 minutes on Thursday afternoon, but it was the Gauchos who were the first on the board in extra time, netting the "golden goal" game-winner in the 97th minute for a 1-0 victory over the Aggies in Big West Conference play at Aggie Soccer Field.

The loss snapped UC Davis' five-match winning streak, dropping the Aggies to 7-4 overall on the year and 2-1 in league play. It was the first defeat for UC Davis since a 1-0 loss at Boise State back on Sept. 2. UCSB improved to 4-6-2 overall and 2-1 in conference.

Thursday's winner for the Gauchos came off the left foot of Leila Emmerson from the top of the 18, burying her shot into the right side of the net for the win. Alyssa O'Brien started the sequence from the back, running up the right side and finding the feet of Shaye Douglas behind two defenders.

Douglas then fed Emmerson with a short pass as the freshman took a touch to create a little space before tucking home her first goal of the year.

Emma Vane and Risa Yamada each finished with two shots on the day for UC Davis as UCSB held a 12-7 advantage in that category, but the two teams combined to put only six total shots on goal. Nicki Rucki finished with three saves in net for UC Davis, while the Gauchos' Evann Smith stopped two shots en route to the clean sheet.

The Aggies close out the weekend at home on Sunday (Oct. 3) at 1 p.m., hosting Cal Poly.
